 | Hosted Web Sites: So You Want a Web Site |
A Five Point action plan to getting up and running from onlineWEBpresence
1/ You have decided that you want a web site. Just by following the following steps, you will be up and running in no time at all.
2/ Domain Name. Now this is what you will be calling your web site. A Domain name is like a cars registration plate. Once you have registered your particular name, no one else can use it while you keep the registration in force. You can register your name for a year or more. Some specific domain extensions require a 2-year registration and you will be informed of this when you register your name.
3/ Once you have registered your name, you can now go ahead and start designing and building up your web site. This can be done in one of many ways.
You can get someone to do this for you.
You can do it yourself using one of the many design programs available
You can do it yourself using a template and you just add your text and images
There is so much information regarding web sites on the Internet and a search will give you untold free information and tutorials regarding this subject
4/ Now you have your Domain Name, the next step is to find a place to store all your files (your web site) up on the internet. This is what is referred to as HOSTING. Hosting is more than just putting your files up on the Internet though. Most hosting companies also supply you with your very own email account that is ***@yourdomainname as well as a great array of extras. Some of your choosing and others come with the hosting account. When you pick a company to host your account, you will be asked to transfer your domain name to their servers. The hosting company will give you a set of reference points called DNS (Domain Name Server) Once these are set with your domain name, the internet will be able to find you. A Domain name is like a car's registration plate. When anyone types your domain name into their computer, they are directed to where your domain name' 's DNS is situated. That is where your files (web site) are. You will not have to change the DNS if you register your domain name at your hosting company as they will take care of all this for you.
5/ Now you have your Domain Name set up and Hosted, the next thing is to upload (transfer your files (web site) UP to the internet.) There are many free programs to do this and your hosting company will give you help in doing this with tutorials available
You don' 't have to have your web site up or available, though, to be able to receive emails from your domain name. Once your DNS has been set at the hosting company, you will be able to receive emails at all times.
